Os Adeuses (The Farewells) Opening Ceremony at Ellis Island

February 9, 2019

The Consello da Cultura Galega (Council for Galician Culture) in collaboration with the Secretaría Xeral de Emigración (General Department of Emigration), curated the exhibit, “The Farewells”, photographs by Alberto Martí that visually document the Galician migrant exodus to the Americas between 1957 and 1963. In the Registry Room at the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, local and Galician dignitaries spoke of the resilience and perseverance of the Galician diaspora, which was followed by a musical performance by world renowned bagpipe player, Cristina Pato. Hundreds of people, many of them descendants of the photographed migrants, attended this once in a lifetime opportunity to honor their ancestors.
